Stage #1:
Completion of Asynchronous, Online Curriculum: TEACH Curriculum and Ultrasound Modules

RADIANT requires all Fellows to first review and complete our adaptation of the Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Healthcare (TEACH) Curriculum series, an interactive, online curriculum with tools to train new reproductive health providers to competence. TEACH is an academic community partnership that started in 2003 as a national initiative to address the need for skilled abortion providers and is commonly used for preparing future abortion providers. RADIANT Fellows will learn the TEACH curriculum with Illinois-specific content and complete assessments offered throughout the ten chapters of the curriculum.

Following completion of the TEACH curriculum, RADIANT Fellows will then complete a series of Ultrasound training modules offered through the National Abortion Federation (NAF).

NAF Ultrasound Modules

To access the NAF Ultrasound modules, you must login through your NAF education membership portal. Navigate to Catalog, then Abortion Trainings and then Ultrasounds. Fellows must complete the following Ultrasound modules:

  1. Ultrasound 1 – Introduction to Ultrasound (16 minutes)
  2. Ultrasound 2 – Anatomy and Planes (18 minutes)
  3. Ultrasound 3 – Early Pregnancy Landmarks & Dating (12 minutes)
  4. Ultrasound 4 – Systematic Scan (8 minutes)
  5. Pregnancy of Uncertain Location (19 minutes)

Completion of the TEACH curriculum and NAF Ultrasound modules must take place prior to Stage #2, which is the scheduled two-day in-person simulation at the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois-Chicago that takes place towards the end of the cohort’s participation in the program.

Stage #2:

Completion of Live Training
Fellows will travel to the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois-Chicago for a two-day, in-person simulation training.

The live simulation session will include one day of instruction on Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) and one day of training on the provision of options counseling services to standardized patients to ensure that their pregnant patients are offered comprehensive counseling, including continuing the pregnancy to parenthood or adoption, or ending the pregnancy with medication or procedural abortion.

Stage #3:

Post-Fellowship Mentorship and Learning Series
Following completion of the online learning and in-person training sessions, Fellows will be paired with a practicing abortion provider for mentorship, and attend an evening learning lecture at the College of Nursing at UIC for further enrichment.
