Join Research Sociologist Gretchen Sisson for a conversation about her book Relinquished, an illuminating examination of adoption in the United States and the women whose lives are shaped by the adoption system.
Drawing on years of research and interviews with birth mothers, Sisson explores the social, economic, and cultural forces that influence decisions to relinquish a child.
The talk will consider adoption beyond familiar narratives of individual choice, examining how inequality, motherhood, race, gender, and reproductive politics shape the experiences of women who place their children for adoption.
Dr. Sisson will discuss the stories and research behind Relinquished and invite attendees to think more deeply about what adoption asks of birth mothers, and what their experiences reveal about American society.
