Essential Emergency Reproductive Healthcare Training in Illinois' Emergency Departments

Now accepting applications for Spring 2027!

Emergency departments (EDs) are a crucial access point for reproductive healthcare, and handle an estimated 2 million visits per year related to complications related to pregnancy. Furthermore, the 2022 Dobbs decision has significant implications for emergency medicine. In Illinois, 34.3% of counties are maternal care deserts.

In response to new federal restrictions on access reproductive care in EDs, the Hospital Emergency Service Act reaffirmed that pregnant people in Illinois can access life-saving, medically necessary reproductive health care, including abortions in the emergency department.

Many ED providers in Illinois require more training and resources to provide essential reproductive healthcare.

In response to this growing need, RADIANT ED launched as a FREE, hybrid online/live training program with ED experts to identify and address institutional challenges and develop strategies to implement change.

To address the training needs of Illinois’ EDs, we developed Radiant ED with Access Bridge, who mentors clinical champions in the ED to implement Early Pregnancy Loss and Medication Abortion curriculum and protocols.

Radiant ED brings together cohorts of Emergency Department clinicians (MDs, DOs, APRNs, PAs) from across Illinois for a FREE fellowship program.

1. SPOTLIGHTING CLINICAL CHAMPIONS

Phase One: Weekly, Online Meetings (11 weeks beginning January 2027; meetings are 2 hours in length)
Participants  are paired into small-group cohorts that meet weekly over eleven (11) weeks to learn clinical skills to manage essential reproductive healthcare from experts in the field through convenient online meetings on:

⋅ Early Pregnancy Loss
⋅ Ectopic Pregnancy
⋅ Emergency Contraception
⋅ Point-of-Care Ultrasound
⋅ Abortion Follow-up
⋅ Perinatal Substance Use Disorder (New!)
⋅ Obstetric Complications (New!)

2. BUILDING SYSTEMS CHANGEMAKERS

In addition to content-based trainings, Radiant ED Fellows will work with our Emergency Department experts to identify and address institutional challenges related to reproductive health care delivery and develop strategies to implement change in a series of online meetings.

3. PROVIDING IMMERSIVE, HANDS-ON SKILLS TRAINING

Phase Two: Live, Two-Day Training on the UIC Campus
Radiant ED Fellows participate in two full, hands-on skills days at UIC’s simulation lab in Chicago (April 2027) to build clinical confidence in diagnosing and managing early pregnancy loss through high-fidelity ultrasound simulators, standardized patient scenarios, and complication case studies.

Each participant completing the program will receive a $5,000 stipend and travel support.

“This program was fantastic. I have felt empowered to tackle my fear of obstetric medicine and have come out more confident in caring for this underserved population, particularly in the critical access emergency department.”
